every platform publishes its image rules somewhere, and none of them agree. etsy wants 2000 pixels, shopify wants 2048, amazon wants a pure white background, ebay says jewelry can look better on dark, and instagram quietly changed its tallest post shape last year.
jewelry makes the numbers matter more than they do for most products. the piece is small, it's shiny, and buyers zoom. a photo that's a few hundred pixels short loses the zoom, and a crop that's too tight gets cut when a marketplace reshapes the thumbnail.
this page puts every requirement in one place, then shows the one export that covers almost all of them.
the short version
| platform | minimum | aim for | shape | file limit | main photo rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| etsy | 635px (first photo) | 2000px+ both sides | landscape or square | none stated; over 1 MB may stall | not dark, blurry or a collage |
| shopify | not stated | 2048 × 2048 | any, kept consistent | 20 MB, 5000 × 5000 | set by your theme |
| amazon | 500px longest side | 1000px+ for zoom | not fixed | not stated; 10,000px max | pure white, 85% fill, no model |
| ebay | 500px longest side | about 1600 × 1600 | 1:1 or 16:9 | 12 MB | no borders, text or watermarks |
| tiktok shop | 600 × 600 | square | 1:1 (3:4 to 4:3 accepted) | 10 MB | pure white, front view |
| instagram feed | not stated | 1080px wide | 1.91:1 to 3:4 | not stated | — |
| not stated | 1000 × 1500 | 2:3 | 20 MB | — | |
| google shopping | 100 × 100 (500 × 500 from jan 31, 2027) | 1500 × 1500 | not fixed | 16 MB, 64 MP | no overlays or borders |
one export that works almost everywhere
you don't need eight versions of every photo. you need one large master and a few crops of it.
the master: at least 2048 pixels on the short side, sRGB, saved as jpeg. that one file clears etsy's 2000px recommendation, shopify's 2048 square, amazon's 1000px zoom threshold, ebay's 1600 and google's 1500 in a single pass. shoot or export bigger if you can; every platform above scales down, none scale up well.
then crop from it:
- square (1:1) for shopify, ebay, tiktok shop and instagram shop catalogs. it's also the safest first photo for etsy.
- portrait (3:4 or 4:5) for the instagram feed.
- tall (2:3) for pinterest.
- vertical (9:16) for reels, stories and tiktok video.
leave room around the piece. etsy crops the same thumbnail to square, portrait and landscape in different parts of the site, and a ring that fills the frame edge to edge loses its shank in one of them. keep the piece in the middle with a clear border on every side.
keep a white-background version of your best angle. amazon and tiktok shop both require a pure white main image, and google recommends one. everywhere else, a warm surface or a styled shot usually does more for jewelry than white does, so this version is for the platforms that insist on it. our guide to backgrounds for jewelry photography covers the rest.
if you're shooting on a phone, the original file from your camera roll is already big enough. photos sent through messaging apps or screenshotted are not. how to photograph jewelry with your phone covers the settings that matter.
etsy
- size: etsy recommends listing photos "have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels". the first photo should be at least 635 pixels on both sides, or the listing can show up lower in search. under 2000 is a warning, not a block.
- how many: up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing.
- shape: there's no single required ratio. the first photo should be landscape or square, and your subject has to stay clear when etsy crops the thumbnail to square, portrait and landscape.
- files: .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic. transparent pngs aren't supported (the transparent areas turn black) and neither are animated gifs. etsy converts everything to the sRGB color profile.
- file size: there's no hard cap, but etsy warns that files over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection. if an upload stalls, lower the jpeg quality a step.
- first photo: it becomes the listing thumbnail. etsy says a main image that is too dark, blurry, or part of a collage may rank lower.
one thing to know: etsy's own image page tells you to use landscape or square for the first photo and, a few paragraphs later, to "avoid square crops." landscape satisfies both.
for a full set of listing images from one piece, see the etsy listing pack.
shopify
- size: any size up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels. for square product images, shopify says "a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best."
- file size: under 20 MB.
- files: png is shopify's first choice, then jpeg. psd, tiff, bmp, gif, svg, heic and webp are also accepted.
- how many: up to 250 images, videos and 3d models per product.
- shape: no required ratio, but keep your main images the same shape across the store. mixed shapes are what make a collection grid look uneven.
shopify doesn't set background rules; your theme and your brand do. what matters is consistency: the same surface, light and crop across every product, so the catalog reads as one store. more on that in jewelry photography for shopify stores.
amazon and amazon handmade
amazon is the strictest platform for jewelry, and the rules apply to the main image (the first one). your other images have more freedom.
- size: at least 500 pixels on the longest side (smaller won't upload), up to 10,000. at 1000 pixels or more, amazon turns on zoom, so treat 1000 as the real minimum.
- files: jpeg (recommended), tiff, png or non-animated gif.
- background: pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255.
- fill: the product should take up 85% of the image, with the whole piece in frame.
- jewelry main images: no model and no mannequin. no borders, watermarks, inset images, logos or text. for close-ups where part of the piece runs off the edge, such as a long pendant chain, amazon asks you to fade the product out at the edge so the border stays white.
- the rest of your images: amazon recommends at least six more images and a video. this is where on-model and lifestyle shots go.
amazon handmade follows the same white-background rules, with one useful difference: when a product is shown in an environment, it only needs to fill at least 50% of the frame.
amazon's jewelry page and its general image guide disagree: the jewelry page lists a 2100px maximum and 80% fill, the general guide 10,000px and 85%. to satisfy both, keep main images at 2100px or less on the long side with the piece filling 85% of the frame. that still clears the 1000px zoom threshold.
ebay
- size: at least 500 pixels on the longest side. ebay recommends "about 1600 x 1600."
- how many: up to 24 photos per listing at no charge.
- file size: up to 12 MB.
- files: jpeg, png, gif, tiff, bmp, webp, heic or avif.
- shape: ebay says 1:1 or 16:9 look best.
- not allowed: added borders, added text or marketing, and watermarks of any kind, including ownership watermarks.
ebay is the one major marketplace that doesn't push white. its own help page says that for "shiny or reflective items like a piece of jewelry, a darker background may work better." for vintage and estate pieces especially, that's worth taking up; see photography for vintage and estate sellers.
tiktok shop
- size: every product image must be at least 600 × 600 pixels.
- how many: up to 9 images, one of them chosen as the main image. to reach tiktok's "good" listing quality tier you need five or more.
- shape: square is recommended; anything between 3:4 and 4:3 uploads.
- files: jpg, jpeg or png, up to 10 MB each.
- main image: pure white background, showing the front of the product.
- not allowed: added logos, text, borders, watermarks or graphics, multiple images of the same angle, black-and-white images, and "placeholders and digital renderings of a product."
- feed posts: instagram stores photos at up to 1080 pixels wide and keeps your shape as long as it falls between 1.91:1 (wide) and 3:4 (tall), so the tallest feed photo is now 1080 × 1440. the familiar 4:5 (1080 × 1350) still works; it's just no longer the tallest option.
- profile grid: since early 2025 the grid shows taller thumbnails instead of squares. keep the piece near the center of every post so it survives the crop.
- reels: anywhere from 1.91:1 to 9:16, at a minimum of 720 pixels. vertical 9:16 fills the screen.
- shop catalog images: shown square, at least 500 × 500 pixels with 1024 × 1024 recommended, jpeg or png, up to 8 MB. meta recommends four or more images per product and advises against text or watermarks over the product.
instagram and facebook shops now send buyers to your own website to check out, so the product photos there are really a preview of your store. ai jewelry photography for instagram covers the feed side.
- size and shape: pinterest recommends 2:3, or 1000 × 1500 pixels. taller pins can get cut off in the feed.
- file size: up to 20 MB on the web.
- files: png, jpeg, webp, tiff or bmp for regular pins; png or jpeg for ads.
jewelry does well on pinterest because people save it long before they buy. a 2:3 crop of an on-model or styled shot works better here than a square product photo.
google shopping
google merchant center feeds your products into google shopping and the shopping tab.
- minimum: 100 × 100 pixels for most products (250 × 250 for clothing) until january 31, 2027. from that date the minimum is 500 × 500 for every product, and merchant center has been warning about smaller images since april 2026.
- aim for: google recommends around 1500 × 1500 or above.
- limits: no larger than 64 megapixels or 16 MB.
- files: jpeg, webp, png, gif, bmp or tiff.
- not allowed: promotional overlays such as watermarks, logos or brand names, and borders. products with these get disapproved.
- recommended: the piece filling 75 to 90% of the image, on a white or transparent background. staged shots that clearly show the product are also acceptable. for accessories, google suggests the product alone in the main image and on a model in the additional images.
rules for ai-generated photos
if some of your images are made with ai, three platforms have rules you should know before you upload.
- amazon: images that include photorealistic ai-generated people have to be tagged with the right metadata when you upload them.
- google shopping: every image created with generative ai must keep the metadata that marks it as ai-generated. don't strip it when you edit or compress the file.
- tiktok shop: "placeholders and digital renderings of a product" aren't allowed.
put together with the white-background rules, the practical answer is simple. on amazon and tiktok shop, make the main image a clean photo of the real piece on white, and use on-model and lifestyle images in the other slots. on etsy, shopify, ebay and social, where main-image rules are looser, styled and on-model images can lead. wherever you post, every image has to show the piece exactly as the buyer will receive it: same metal, same stone, same size.
check a photo before you upload
the jewelry photo checker measures a photo against the etsy, shopify, instagram and pinterest sizes above, and scores the lighting, focus, background and how much of the frame the piece fills. it runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
the shortcut
the sizes are the easy part. the hard part is having enough good images of every piece to fill 20 slots on etsy, a square grid on shopify and a week of vertical video.
bling ai turns one phone photo of a piece into on-model and styled photos and video, which covers the supporting images every platform above asks for.
