the math
how platinum value is calculated.
platinum is priced by the troy ounce, which is 31.1 grams. that headline number, the spot price, is for pure platinum. every other calculation starts there.
divide spot by 31.1 for the price of one gram of pure platinum, then multiply by the piece's purity and its weight:
(spot ÷ 31.1) × purity × grams = melt value
purity comes from the fineness mark: 950 platinum is 0.95, 900 is 0.90. platinum is also denser than gold, so an identical-looking ring weighs more — and its melt reflects that.
the same math runs the gold price calculator and the silver price calculator, for the rest of the box.
reading the stamp
not sure what your platinum is?
platinum jewelry carries a fineness mark or a “PLAT” abbreviation. unlike gold, it's rarely plated, so the mark usually means solid metal.

melt vs. offer
why an offer is lower than melt.
melt value is the theoretical worth of the raw platinum. a refiner or buyer pays below it to cover refining, risk, and margin — and platinum's higher melting point can mean a slightly wider spread than gold.
the payout control models each offer against the live melt, so the number you're quoted has something honest to sit next to.
and because platinum is the metal of fine diamond settings, a finished piece is almost always worth far more than its melt. the metal is the floor, not the ceiling.
