925 is 925 parts silver in every 1,000. pure silver is too soft to hold a shape or a stone, so the remaining 7.5%, usually copper, makes it strong enough for everyday jewelry.
the copper is also why sterling tarnishes. it darkens with air and skin contact over months, and it polishes back without harming the piece.
a 925 stamp on a gold-colored piece usually means gold vermeil or gold-plated sterling: solid silver underneath, a gold layer on top. the silver is real; the gold is only a coating.
before you trust it
how to check a 925 stamp.
- hold a strong magnet to it. silver isn't magnetic, so a piece that clings to the magnet is plated steel or another base metal.
- look at worn edges and the back of clasps. on silver-plated brass or copper, a yellow or pink color shows through where the plating has worn.
- look for a maker's mark next to the stamp. in the united states, anyone who stamps a gold or silver quality mark on a piece made since 1962 must stamp a registered trademark beside it, so a lone number with no maker's mark proves very little.
- cheap imports sometimes carry a 925 stamp on plated base metal. if the price was far below the silver value, be skeptical.
- for certainty, ask a jeweler or gold buyer for an XRF scan. it reads the metal's composition in seconds without scratching the piece, unlike an acid test.
