what vermeil means.
in the united states, vermeil describes sterling silver coated or plated with gold of at least 10k and at least 2.5 microns thick. a thinner gold layer over silver can't be sold as vermeil; it's gold-plated sterling.
most vermeil pieces are stamped 925 rather than 'vermeil', because the stamp describes the silver. a gold-colored piece stamped 925 is either vermeil or gold-plated silver.
it sits between plating and gold filled for durability, and it's popular for demi-fine jewelry because it looks like gold at a fraction of the price.

how to check a vermeil stamp.
- look for a 925 stamp on the gold-colored piece. that confirms solid silver underneath.
- as the gold wears, silver-white metal shows through. that's expected on vermeil and doesn't mean the piece is fake.
- hold a strong magnet to it. silver isn't magnetic, so a piece that clings to the magnet is plated steel or another base metal.
