999 is millesimal fineness: 999 parts pure metal in every 1,000. it's the highest purity you'll normally see on jewelry, and it's used for both gold and silver.
on yellow metal, 999 is 24k gold: bullion, coins, and the high-purity gold jewelry popular in china, hong kong and south asia. investment bars often go one step further to 9999. some chinese pieces use 990, a 99% standard.
on white metal, 999 is fine silver. it's brighter and much softer than sterling, and it's used for bullion, some artisan pieces, and jewelry made from silver clay.

how to check a 999 stamp.
- look at the color and feel the weight. 24k gold is a deep, saturated yellow and very heavy for its size; fine silver is bright white and far lighter.
- both metals are very soft at 99.9%. a thin 999 ring that never dents or scratches with wear deserves a closer look.
- on a gold piece, any silver, copper or gray showing at worn edges means plating.
- for certainty, ask a jeweler or gold buyer for an XRF scan. it reads the metal's composition in seconds without scratching the piece, unlike an acid test.
