what EPNS means.
nickel silver, also called german silver, is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. it's named for its silvery color, not its content: there's no silver in it.
EPNS pieces are nickel silver with a thin electroplated layer of real silver on top. EPBM means the same plating over britannia metal, a pewter-like alloy. you'll also see A1 on some older plated cutlery, a maker's quality claim rather than a hallmark.
EPNS is common on older cutlery, trays, teapots and some costume jewelry. it looks like solid silver when new and polished.

how to check a EPNS stamp.
- look for EPNS, EP, EPBM or A1 anywhere on the piece. any of them means plated, not solid silver.
- check the high points and edges. where the silver layer has worn, a yellowish base metal shows through.
- solid silver usually carries 925, 800 or a national hallmark instead.
