958 is 958 parts silver in every 1,000. britannia silver was introduced in england in 1697, when it was made compulsory to stop coins being melted down for silverware, and it has stayed a legal UK standard ever since.
with less copper than sterling, it's softer, brighter and a little slower to tarnish. that makes it a favorite of silversmiths for hand-raised and hammered work, and less common in everyday jewelry.
