what 24k gold is.
24k is pure gold, 24 parts out of 24. nothing is ever quite 100%, so 24k is stamped 999 for 99.9% gold. investment bars often read 9999, and some asian jewelry is marked 990 or 995.
because the spot price is quoted for pure gold, a gram of 24k is simply the spot price per troy ounce divided by 31.1. every other karat on this site is a fraction of that number.
pure gold is soft. it scratches, dents and bends far more easily than 18k or 14k, so most 24k is bars, coins and bullion. as jewelry it's mainly bought where gold doubles as savings, in china, hong kong and parts of south and southeast asia.
