what 750 means.
750 is 750 parts gold in every 1,000, exactly 18 karats out of 24. the stamp is used worldwide; american pieces are more often stamped 18K.
the other 25% decides the color. copper warms it to rose, silver and copper give yellow, and palladium or nickel give white gold, which is usually rhodium plated for a brighter finish. the gold content, and the melt value per gram, is the same for all three.
Au750 is the same standard written with the chemical symbol for gold, and it's common on pieces made in china and hong kong.
before you trust it
how to check a 750 stamp.
- read the whole stamp. letters after the number change everything: 14K GF, 14K GP, 18K HGE and 1/20 12K RGP all describe plated or filled pieces, not solid gold.
- hold a strong magnet to it. gold isn't magnetic, so a piece that pulls toward the magnet isn't solid gold. a steel spring inside a clasp can still be magnetic on a genuine piece, so test the body, not the clasp.
- check the edges, the inside of the band and the back of the clasp, where pieces wear first. if a different color shows through, silver, copper or gray, it's plated, whatever the stamp says.
- look for a maker's mark next to the stamp. in the united states, anyone who stamps a gold or silver quality mark on a piece made since 1962 must stamp a registered trademark beside it, so a lone number with no maker's mark proves very little.
- for certainty, ask a jeweler or gold buyer for an XRF scan. it reads the metal's composition in seconds without scratching the piece, unlike an acid test.
