10k is 10 parts gold out of 24, or 41.7%, and it's stamped 10K or 417. for decades it was the lowest karat that could be called gold in the united states. the FTC's jewelry guides dropped that floor in 2018, as long as the karat is stated, but 10k is still the traditional minimum in american jewelry.
with more alloy than gold, 10k is the hardest and most affordable gold in american jewelry. it's often used for class rings, men's rings and chains that take a lot of wear.
