what 18k gold is.
18k is 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75%, and it's stamped 750. it's the standard for fine jewelry in europe and the karat most luxury and designer houses work in.
the other 25% sets the color. more copper gives rose gold; silver and copper give yellow; palladium or nickel give white gold, which is usually rhodium plated for a brighter white. the gold content doesn't change with color, so 18k yellow, white and rose are all 75% gold and worth the same per gram as scrap.
18k is softer than 14k and scratches a little more easily, but it has a richer color and, for most people, less risk of skin reactions because there's less alloy in it.
