what RGP means.
rolled gold plate is made by the same process as gold filled: a sheet of gold alloy mechanically bonded to base metal. the difference is quantity. it's used when the gold layer is less than the 1/20th of total weight that gold filled requires, down to a minimum of 1/40th.
US guidelines ask for the fraction and karat to be stated in front of the term, for example 1/40 10K RGP: 1/40th of the metal's weight is 10k gold.
RGP is common on vintage watch cases, cufflinks and costume jewelry from the mid twentieth century.

- look at edges and high points. once the thin layer wears through, brass or base metal shows.
