375 is 375 parts gold in every 1,000, or 9 karats out of 24. british jewelers usually write carat with a C, so you'll see 9ct on older UK pieces.
a UK-hallmarked 375 piece carries more than the number: a sponsor's mark identifying the maker, the 375 fineness mark and the mark of the assay office that tested it. older pieces often add a date letter too.
9k was long kept out of american stores, because US guidelines treated 10k as the minimum for gold until 2018. 375 pieces found in the US are usually british, irish, australian or older european jewelry.

how to check a 375 stamp.
- look for the other UK hallmark symbols beside 375: a maker's initials in a shield and an assay office mark such as a leopard's head (london), anchor (birmingham), rose (sheffield) or castle (edinburgh). a lone 375 is weaker evidence.
- hold a strong magnet to it. gold isn't magnetic, so a piece that pulls toward the magnet isn't solid gold. a steel spring inside a clasp can still be magnetic on a genuine piece, so test the body, not the clasp.
- check the edges, the inside of the band and the back of the clasp, where pieces wear first. if a different color shows through, silver, copper or gray, it's plated, whatever the stamp says.
- for certainty, ask a jeweler or gold buyer for an XRF scan. it reads the metal's composition in seconds without scratching the piece, unlike an acid test.
